Up until the early 1970's, Downtown Fort Worth was a bustling place, primarily serving the markets of West Texas.  After the construction of suburban shopping malls, the CBD began a decline.  It was most noticeable during the decade of the 1970's when many of the downtown department stores closed and much of the downtown retail relocated to the suburbs.  During the decade of the 1980's, this decline was turned around by the construction of new office buildings and restoration of several older skyscrapers.

Since then, Downtown Fort Worth has become a model for downtown redevelopment.   Construction has been steady since the four largest office towers were opened in the early 1980's.  In addition to the new construction, many older buildings have either been restored for office use, or converted into residential properties.

The area included in Downtown is bounded by the Trinity River on the north and west, I-35 W on the east, and I-30 on the south.
